Let’s Talk Food Waste & Composting: Free Pizza, Local Insights, and Greener Habits

The City of Fitchburg’s Resource Conservation Commission is serving up a night of sustainable solutions—and free pizza! Join them on Tuesday, June 17, from 6:00–7:30 PM at the Fitchburg Public Library for an event that’s all about tackling food waste and learning the ins and outs of composting.

Why it matters:
More than 30% of what ends up in the Dane County Landfill is organic material that could have been composted. That’s food waste that could nourish soil instead of taking up space in a landfill.

What to expect:

  • Easy tips to reduce food waste at home

  • Local food scrap drop-off locations you can start using today

  • Beginner-friendly composting guidance for your backyard or kitchen setup

  • A talk from a local farmer growing fresh produce using compost in community gardens

Oh, and did we mention the free Ian’s Pizza and giveaways? Just bring a reusable water bottle and your curiosity—this event is open to everyone who wants to make a difference, one banana peel at a time.

Whether you’re compost-curious or already a worm bin pro, you’ll leave with new ideas (and maybe a slice or two).

MAKER FEATURE

This week’s maker feature is Designed in 9.

Designed in 9 started many years ago in a very small apartment. Apartment number 9. Since then, the numbers on the front door have changed, but the goal of creating for my favorite littles has always stayed. It started with the tiny humans I nannied and has now carried over to my own children. They have been the inspiration, product testers, and littlest helpers. They have watched me grow, learn new skills, and make plenty of mistakes along the way. I hope they see my passion for creating, learning, and growing, and that it inspires them as they grow up too.

I'm constantly trying out new crafts and ideas, but you can always find fun activities for kids (and kids at heart!) in my shop. The washable pouch play mats are an idea that went through lots of trial and error over the years. They’ve now become one of my favorite things to make, and my kids' favorite thing to take on the go! You can also find paper house templates, lunch notes, and lots of stickers!

Shop on Etsy at designedin9.etsy.com and follow along on Instagram at @designedin9
